Duties of Constable

The term Constable has antecedents, protector of the peace and the law within the City. The routine duties and responsibility of Constable include the following:

  • The Constable will assist the Clerk in ensuring that the Masters’ and Wardens’ gowns and the Master’s chain are available when required.
  • The Constable will work closely with the Clerk arranging the Sentinels for duty’s at any functions or meeting.
  • The Constable may be asked to act as M.C. at the Company luncheon at the Guildhall, using format provided by the Master.
  • The Constable will assist in the organisation of the Company’s involvement in the Lord Mayor’s Show.
  • Assist the Clerk at the Company’s church services, by arranging sentinels acting as ushers.
  • Being part of the Procession to Church from Common Hall, behind the Beadle, and in front of the Master and Wardens.
  • Arranging that the Sentinels Assist the Under Warden in displaying and polishing the Company Silver on occasions when Company Silver is displayed, and in particular on the occasion of the Massey Shaw Dinner.

The Appointment will be made by the Management Board, once a year, at the same time other promotions within the Company are considered.

The appointment is for one year, renewable each year at the time elections in the Company are held. There is no maximum length of term in the position.

Duties of Sentinel

The term Sentinel has antecedents, having beenthe name adopted for firewatchers to watch over the city in 1667. The routine duties and responsibility of Sentinels include the following:

  • Assist the Clerk in ensuring that the Masters’ and Wardens’ gowns and the Master’s chain are available when required.
  • Assisting in the organisation of the Company’s involvement in the Lord Mayor’s Show.
  • Assist the Clerk at the Company’s church services, by acting as ushers and organising collections taken at services.
  • Being part of the Procession to Church from Common Hall, behind the Beadle, and in front of the Master and Wardens.
  • Assisting the Under Warden in displaying and polishing the Company Silver on occasions when Company Silver is displayed, and in particular on the occasion of the Massey Shaw Dinner. In particular, Sentinels will be responsible for ensuring that displayed silver is returned to the vault after dinners, relieving the Master and Wardens to continue to ensure that the official guests are looked after.
  • In addition, the Master, Wardens or Clerk may ask Sentinels for their help on other occasions, at their discretion.

The Appointment will be made by the Management Board, once a year, at the same time other promotions within the Company are considered.
